Chicago Church Of Christ Men's Retreat

The gentlemen of the Chicago Church Of Christ's Metro ministry center holed up Jan. 23-25 at a Doubletree Hotel way out in the western suburbs to learn about The Blood Of Victory. The complimentary breakfast was awesome, the sand at North Beach was great for digging in and The Bible was, as always, the greatest.

Roberto Clemente at The United Center

Every January, Roberto Clemente High School gets a game at The United Center before the Bulls play that night. Clemente coaches Mark Crawley and Dell Jenkins invited me to shoot their Jan. 23 match against the Schurz Bulldogs. I promised them I would produce better photos than ever with my new lenses – hopefully I delivered.

Brian The Harmonica Guy

This is Brian, or possibly Bryan, a homeless man I met when I was downtown a few weeks ago, celebrating my wife's birthday. His hustle is playing the harmonica, and he's really good. We talked for a second about stuff, nothing in particular. The restaurant we were eating at has a valet service, and one of the drivers went past and ordered Brian to stop harassing me and move along. I tried to tell the valet that Brian was talking to me, not harassing me, but the valet was yelling over me.

We all ended up going our separate ways. Brian will probably never see this picture, but it's worth putting up anyway.

From the Ukraine, with lots of love

This event was more complex than the previous outing.

My wife Christine and I attended the wedding of Nataliya and Steve, two friends from our church. Except we weren't just guests: Christine was the wedding coordinator, and I was the DJ/MC.

The bride, hailing from the Ukraine, introduced us to several of her homeland's customs, most notably its dancing! When we had a few seconds, we managed to get some fun shots -- a reflection of how much fun we and their other guests were having.

Jen and Jim's wedding was a zoo

Jen invited my wife Christine and I to her big day, which was easily one of the most elegant and tasteful weddings I've seen so far. She and Jim got married Jan. 3 at Cafe Brauer at the Lincoln Park Zoo.

We were there only as guests, so I didn't take any pictures of the ceremony. I knew that if I jumped out of my seat to get one shot, I would end up climbing all over the place and making a nuisance of myself.

But I did go moderately crazy during the reception. The results are included here.
