We all brawl

I've covered plenty of fundraisers. None like this, though.

The University of Illinois-Chicago chapter of HOPE WorldWide held a "Mario Kart Brawl" benefit for a nearby homeless shelter on April 10. Grown-up participants squeezed onto kid-sized Razor Flash Rider 360 scooter/tricycle things and raced around a cone- and string-lined track in the university's recreation center.

The track included several tight turns and a figure-8. A lot of crashes and spin-outs resulted.

But the calamity produced more than $400 for the shelter — along with a few bruised egos, and a lot of laughs.
